Learn from Your Competitor’s Digital Marketing Strategy

Marketing is an ever-changing environment. In the past, businesses could be successful by advertising in newspapers, on television or on the radio—but consumers are steadily turning away from traditional media and spending more time online. This means your marketing has to adapt and the first step is to know where your business stands in relation to your competition.

Keywords and Ranking
Do a quick Google search for keywords that your target audience would likely use to find your services. Which of your competitor websites show up? Do you see your company on the first page of results?

If your site isn’t organically ranking for commonly used keywords—then you’re losing business to the sites that show up first. There’s also pay-per-click (PPC) advertising to consider. Search and display ads are a proven way to increase brand awareness, website traffic and leads. If you’re not running any type of PPC, you’re missing out on opportunities to get your brand in front of potential customers.

Social Media Presence
The majority of Canadians use social media. A recent Ryerson University study found that 94% of online adults have at least one social media account, with Facebook still being the most popular platform.1 Head over to your competition’s Facebook and Instagram account and look at how active their pages are. Do they post regularly? Are people interacting with their posts? If they have a large following and are posting quality content—they’re likely converting on their page—stealing your potential customers.

Website Development
Consumers increasingly want to be able to do everything online. Check out competing websites to see what services they’re offering. For example, they might have developed an online scheduling system so their customers can book, change or cancel appointments, or have added an online payment system so customers can pay bills online. Seeing what services your competitors are offering will give you an idea of what your customers are looking for.

Having a digital marketing strategy is not an option—it’s a requirement to effectively compete.
